512mb Pcie 1x Video Card | Huge Pedia

by Karpat Zoltan

Video cards in computers don't always need to be connected to a very high speed slot, because some models simply aren't fast enough to benefit from a higher bus speed.

Most video cards that are still available for PCI, AGP and USB fall into this category, but also a few PCI-Express 1X cards that would in fact require faster data transfers.

The big majority of video cards available today fit in PCI-Express 16X slots, although they would work just fine in 8X or 4X slot too. Yes, the difference in transfer rate speeds is proportional to the slot's number before the “X”. The slots in the image above have one PCI-Express lane, four lanes, eight and sixteen, so how is it possible that the same video card with the same specs is released for X1 slots and also for 16X slots? The answer is relatively simple. The 1X slot video cards are mostly used in computer systems that require more compatibility (with recent software) and less speed, while 16X slot video cards target the average desktop computer user.
