Overcoming network limitations in IP cameras | Viacam Security

by viacam

As people look to move towards IP cameras and other IP networking products for their security systems there comes the question of the limitations of networks in terms of range and bandwidth. Most Ethernet networks are good for up to 100meters, but much beyond this there can be problems with data transfer, speed etc. Throw PoE (Power over Ethernet) into the mix as well and it can quickly become confusing for the none “techie”.

The aim of this post is to unravel this and make it simple and easy to understand.

First of all, PoE, what’s it all about? Well put simply it’s a way of powering IP devices over standard UTP cable used for networking setups. You can supply DC current from a PoE enabled network switch, or injector. This cuts down on cabling and wiring costs, installation time and needing power points strategically positioned near to cameras. Buildings that already have a UTP cable backbone for their local area network (LAN) means you can just plug the cameras right into that existing network. The limitation is however 100 meters, and putting injectors “midspan” does not increase the data transfer distance.
