Whilst the initial implementation of virtualization can be traced back to IBM in the 1960s, there is no denying the fact that virtualization is only now taking the information technology industry by storm. Requirements to reduce costs through maximized server utilization and minimized power consumption have converged to highlight the importance of virtualization in ways that could not have been imagined just a few years ago.

Oppenheimer Discusses Windows Server 8 The next edition of Windows Server features over 100 new capabilities and enhancements, including a new Hyper-V hypervisor. During a demo at the conference, MSFT showed off new functionality of its Hyper-V Replica (next edition of its hypervisor). |
"Improvements in Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 and bring a lot of parity function with [VMware]," said Dan Germain, director of the hosting infrastructure partner for Microsoft Outsourcery, a service provider cloud. "The next version of Hyper-V will really nail."
Microsoft executives have also taken their share of shots at VMware new memory-based license vSphere 5, using its potential effects on the cost to hammer their message that the Microsoft virtualization is more affordable for customers - and somewhat cons-intuitive more profitable for partners.
